LIMA BIRDING DAY TOURS
DAY TOURS BY DESTINATION

PUCUSANA / CAÑETE VALLEY / VILLA – FULL DAY
With the opportunity to spot a few endemics and several restricted-range species in a range of habitats in just one day, this tour packs a punch and should be added to every birder’s itinerary as they travel through Lima. From the shores of Pucusana where you’ll have great chances to see the Humboldt Penguins swimming the rocky shoreline, to the sweeping Cañete Valley where a Slender-billed Finch is likely to perch nearby, to the Villa wetlands where the Many-colored Rush-Tyrants love to forage in the reeds, this is a quick-and-easy opportunity to escape the the city and boost your checklist in Peru.

LOMAS DE LACHAY / VENTANILLA – FULL DAY
Lachay National Reserve is a refreshing burst of nature located just one hour north of Lima. The area is subject to well-marked seasonality, which has a strong influence on the vegetation and wildlife, and supports a high level of endemism among birds. This tour concentrates on the many endemics, including: Cactus Canastero, Thick-billed and Coastal Miners and Raymondi Yellow-Finch. We will also be on the lookout for others such as Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Least Seedsnipe, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Amazilia Hummingbird, Mountain Parakeet, Peruvian Thicknees, Masked Yellowthroat and Collared Warbling-Finch, among others.

SANTA EULALIA ROAD (lower section) – FULL DAY
With a pre-dawn departure in order to beat morning rush hour in Lima, this long and full day of day birding visits the Santa Eulalia Road located on the Western slope of the Andes. This tour benefits from the road’s elevation changes which produce an incredible combination of landscapes and habitats that greatly influence the birds. Species of interest include: such as Bronze-tailed Comet, Black Metaltail, Black-necked Woodpecker, Dark-winged Miner, Thick-billed Miner, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Great Inca Finch, and Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch.

SANTA EULALIA ROAD (lower & upper sections) – 2 DAYS
This 2-Day tour from Lima is the continuation of our full-day tour (above) to include higher elevations and different habitats, including a patch of polylepis forest where we will be looking for the main target: The White-cheeked Cotinga. Traveling from 800m to 4200m in just two days, we’ll have great chances to find species like Bronze-tailed Comet, Striated Earthcreeper and Rusty-crowned Tit Spinetail. At the higher elevations, we will be very keen to look for Giant Coot, Diademed Sandpiper Plover, Andean Snipe, and even Andean Condors!

PALOMINO ISLANDS / VENTANTILLA – FULL DAY
Test your sea legs and breathe in the salty air on this full-day birding tour off the coast of Lima. Exploring by private boat, this tour offers a unique opportunity to observe some of the avianfauna that occurs within the cold waters of the Humboldt Current. Without a doubt the most after sought species on this tour is the Humboldt Peguin, which can be found at Cavinzas island. Other species of interest include Inca Tern, Red-legged Cormorant, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Kelp Gull and Belcher’s Gull. Depending on the time of year, we may even catch some boreal migrants in their wintering grounds. Escape the city for a day and enjoy a different view of Peru!
