PALOMINO ISLANDS + VENTANILLA

FULL DAY TOUR

TOUR SUMMARY

Test your sea legs and breathe in the salty air on this full-day birding tour off the coast of Lima. Exploring by private boat, this tour offers a unique opportunity to observe some of the avianfauna that occurs within the cold waters of the Humboldt Current. Without a doubt the most after sought species on this tour is the Humboldt Peguin, which can be found at Cavinzas island. Other species of interest include Inca Tern, Red-legged Cormorant, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Kelp Gull and Belcher’s Gull. Depending on the time of year, we may even catch some boreal migrants in their wintering grounds. Escape the city for a day and enjoy a different view of Peru!

About the Palomino Islands

The Palomino Islands are a group of small islands that lie off the coast of Callao, a district of Lima, Peru. Home to a large population of seabirds and sea lions, it is an excellent and easily-accessible destination to see a significant amount of wildlife living in its natural habitat. On the highest point of the islands sits an old lighthouse which served to guide ships that were arriving through the port of Callao.

About Ventanilla

North of Lima’s airport in the suburb of Ventanilla sits this fenced-in wetland covering 366 hectares with a visitor center and an observation tower. 5:30 AM – Hotel pickup, drive to Callao (30 minutes). When we arrive to the departure dock, a representative will meet us and assist us in shuttling out to our boat (via a smaller boat). Upon boarding, the crew will deliver a safety orientation and will soon depart for the Palomino Islands.

8:00 AM – After a 1.5-hour boat ride we will arrive to the Palomino Islands, where we will spend the rest of the morning observing birds and wildlife.

12:00 PM – Return by boat to Callao where we will enjoy a fresh seafood lunch in a nearby restaurant.

1:30 PM – Depart Callao and begin driving to the Ventanilla marshes (approx. 45 minutes away). When we arrive, we will be looking for some of the most representative waterfowl typical of these habitats. Species such as Cinnamon Teal, White-cheeked Pintail, Ruddy Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Andean Coot, Common Moorhen, among others. Also at the reeds one can see other species like Peruvian Thicknee, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Vermilion Flycatcher, Yellowish Pipit just to mention a few.

4:00 PM – Begin driving back to Lima. Depending on traffic, this could take anywhere between 1 and 2 hours.

6:00 PM – Arrival back to your hotel.
